Pityriasis Rosea

What is Pityriasis Rosea ?

Pityriasis Rosea is a common, temporary skin condition that causes a distinctive rash. It usually starts with a single large pink or red patch known as a “herald patch”, followed by smaller patches spreading across the chest, back, and limbs. Although it can look concerning, it is not contagious and generally resolves on its own within 6 to 8 weeks.
The exact cause of Pityriasis Rosea is not fully understood, but it is believed to be linked to viral infections, particularly human herpesvirus types 6 and 7 (HHV-6, HHV-7). It often affects teenagers and young adults, but it can occur at any age.

Symptoms

Herald Patch – A single large oval, pink or red scaly spot, often on the chest or back.
Secondary Rash – Smaller similar spots appear days to weeks later, usually following the skin’s natural lines, giving a “Christmas tree” pattern on the back.
Itching – May be mild to severe in some people.
Other Symptoms – Some people experience fatigue, headache, sore throat, or mild fever before the rash appears.

How is Pityriasis Rosea Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made by clinical examination due to its characteristic appearance. In rare cases, the doctor may order:

  • Skin scraping or biopsy to rule out fungal infections or psoriasis
  • Blood tests if needed to rule out other conditions

Treatment Options

Most cases of Pityriasis Rosea do not require treatment and clear up naturally. However, to relieve discomfort:

Moisturizers and gentle skincare – To reduce dryness and irritation
Antihistamines or anti-itch lotions – To control itching
Light therapy (UVB phototherapy) – In severe cases, under dermatologist guidance
Avoid hot showers and harsh soaps – To prevent skin irritation

Prognosis

Pityriasis Rosea usually resolves without leaving scars, although temporary skin discoloration may remain for a few weeks after the rash clears.
